Special Feature: Darkness Rising
by Elissa Wilds

The Perfect Love Match

From the moment I sat down to write both Darkness Rising and its prequel, Between Light and Dark, I knew that I wanted to do something a little different with my paranormal tales. I wanted to incorporate real magic into my stories. By real magic, I mean magic that appears in real life and is used by real people. Magic like witchcraft and psychic ability and divination, to name just a few areas of paranormal study that turn up in my books. Since the concept of soulmates is one that intrigues me, and since there is nothing more magical and romantic than the idea of two halves of a perfect whole reuniting after lifetimes apart, I decided this was the theme I wanted to incorporate into the plot of Darkness Rising.

But first, I should explain the difference between soulmates and what are often referred to as Twin Souls, Twin Flames, or Twin Rays. There are many soulmates for every person. There is only one Twin Soul for each of us. The idea goes something like this…in the beginning we were created, each of as one whole being, equally feminine and masculine. Then we divided into two, the masculine and the feminine separating. And we divided again, and again, and again. That first division split apart you and your twin soul. The remaining divisions are your soulmates. We spend lifetime after lifetime searching for and experiencing love, growing, and learning - all in preparation for our eventual reunion with our Twin Soul. Once reunited, the joy and ecstasy we experience with our perfect match is unparalleled. (I should mention here that I use the term soulmate in the book to avoid any confusion the term Twin Soul might have caused readers who weren’t familiar with the concept).

This idea isn’t a new one. Think of Plato and his famous image of the hermaphrodite split into two halves, masculine and feminine. Think of the Ying/Yang of Chinese philosophy.

One of many interesting things about Twin Souls is that they do not reunite without purpose. They come together with a job to do, some task or mission that is meant to help the world in some way. In Darkness Rising, the heroine, Aurora, is the Earth Balancer. She’s half-goddess, witch, and the one being who stands in the way of the evil attempting to take over Earth. Her powers are failing, and Mobius, a Light God, is sent to help. Their mission is – literally - to save Earth.

When Twin Souls reunite, there is a knowing within them that there’s something different about this person; they feel drawn to him/her even if they don’t know why. And their attraction is fierce. Mobius believes Aurora is his Twin Soul – a woman who died a century ago leaving him with a heartache that never healed and a burning desire to find his love again. Aurora feels drawn to Mobius, but then again, Mobius is a gorgeous, muscular god with long blazing red hair and piercing amber eyes. Who wouldn’t be drawn to him? And their attraction? Sizzling.

In the end, regardless of whether Aurora is or isn’t his Twin Soul, Mobius falls for her in a big way, as does she for him - while battling demons, ferreting out a traitor within their fold, and risking life and limb to save Earth.

As for the real life magical potential of Twin Souls and soulmates, perhaps you’ll pay closer attention the next time you meet that special someone who makes your heart skip a beat or two. Maybe you’ll take the time to look a bit deeper. Do you see something familiar in their eyes? Does his or her touch feel, inexplicably, like home?

Or maybe, if you’re really lucky, you’ve realized your beloved is that person you’ve already been cuddling up next to every night for years. Your perfect match.
