In the original version of Pandora's Box, I started each chapter with a blog entry written by my heroine, Mina Avery. I ended up deleting the entries for pacing reasons, but I thought you might like reading them because they offer a sneak peek into Mina's thoughts during pivotal moments in the story. As you might expect, a woman who inherits guardianship of a cursed puca has a lot on her mind. Here's a sampling of the deleted 'posts':

[From the web log of Pandemina Dorothy Avery:]
When seriously contemplating a pact with the devil (well, okay, so maybe not literally the devil, but pretty damn close to it), a girl should spend some time pondering consequences. As in, what exactly is she putting on the line just to get what she wants?
I, for example, would love nothing better than to have all my dreams come true, especially if wish fulfillment demanded not even the tiniest little effort on my part. Everything I've ever wanted, wrapped in pretty paper, tied with a shiny bow, and bearing a card with my name clearly printed in the "To:" section.
As a supposedly mature adult, however, I have to wonder: Are these dreams really worth anything if somebody just hands them over to me? But I already worked hard to build the life I wanted, only to have it all snatched away from me. That should mean something, shouldn't it? I tried doing things the conventional way.
So now here I am, just sitting on my ass and minding my pathetic business, while the devil shows up bearing presents. What's a girl to do?

Sex or food. You know, I read an article in this magazine once that said some women, when given a choice between chocolate and an orgasm, actually chose the magic of the cocoa bean over sex. I had to wonder -- being dirty-minded and deprived of the sex choice at the time myself -- if these women had ever experienced great sex and if they hadn't, if great sex would change their minds about the choices they'd made. I also wondered if the caliber of chocolate could be weighed against the caliber of sex and . . . Okay, so it only got more complicated after that first thought.
Still, another question occurs to me. (They do, sometimes, especially at night when I'm buzzed on wine and things I shouldn't have done but really enjoyed.) If these women had to starve their taste buds or starve their libidos for a full year, which would they choose? And would they go insane from deprivation before the year was up? What outrageousness might they be willing to commit just to rescind that decision when the waiting and the strain became too much to bear?

[From the web log of Pandemina Dorothy Avery:]
Ever notice how a woman's love life follows a cycle of feast and famine? If one guy thinks she's hot, then the rest line up at the door for a chance at her. If she's lonely and lacking . . . not a guy in sight to alleviate the problem.
Why is that? Competition? Maybe she periodically emits some wild cocktail of pheromones, on the order of 'Come get me, baby, I'm an acrobatic wonder of hungry and dripping orifices'? Or maybe, once one guy thinks she's hot, she relaxes her guard. Then all the other guys, sensing a lowered level of desperation, feel free to move in her direction?
Or maybe it's just some crazy fluke common to a world orchestrated along chaotic lines designed to drive a normal woman batty. Picture earth's control room overrun by a party of young chimpanzees downing gallons of banana daiquiris.

Well, there you have it. A brief view into the life and times of a shape-shifting puca's guardian. I would have let Riordan dash off a blog post or two, but he'd find it hard to keyboard with a paw or hoof. Sure, he could assume human form to type, but every time he presents his gorgeous and manly self, poor Mina seems to lose all grasp of the English language. And that breathing ability seems to expire as well. Cruel, don't you think? Curse-breaking's a tough enough business without testing a woman's rogue libido as well.
